NPR's 50 Great Voices

I'm loving NPR's ongoing series 50 Great Voices.

Among the 50 that have been profiled are Irma Thomas, Freddie Mercury, Bjork, Ella Fitzgerald, Donny Hathaway, and Janis Joplin. There are also quite a few artists that I am not familiar with: Fairuz, Khaled, Sezen Aksu, and so on.

Tonight's segment was about Robert Plant. Fantastic.

Gay Men Achieve World-Record Longest Kiss

This is just adorable...

Gay Men Achieve World-Record Longest Kiss

Standing in a tent on the campus of The College of New Jersey, Matty Daley and Bobby Canciello earned a place in the Guinness World Records today by kissing for 33 hours. They livestreamed video of it and just finished.

When I tuned in to Matty and Bobby's Ustream video channel around 8PM, that had just emerged victorious. Their fans cheering in the background, Bobby sipped water from a bottle and Matty leaned into the camera and thanked the internet. The rules for "Longest Continuous Kiss" specify that the couple must be standing and in a public venue. The duo devised a system of hand signals and stretching exercises to get them through the physically grueling feat of staying awake for a day and a half, standing with your mouth mashed against someone else's. Here's a sample:

Adult diapers are not allowed either (Guinness isn't into fetish kisses?) so the lads did a "cleanse" and nutritional training, too. No word on whether they peed at any point; before embarking on the kiss, they acknowledged having a contingency plan for that.

Matty and Bobby's stated goal was to "queer the Guinness World Records.". They are not lovers but "just friends." Bobby got permission from his boyfriend before embarking on the kiss.

Music Update

U2 is the Greatest Band of All Time.

Led Zeppelin is second.

U2 Bad...

But daily, I have to be sure.

Here are today's contenders -

Spoon - Got Nuffin...

The Arcade Fire - Wake Up...(dammit. I'm 8 months late with this one.)

Joe Bonamassa - Just Got Paid / Dazed and Confused (With a ZZ Top opening and a Zeppelin finish - and a subtle Frampton interlude - I'm hoping I beat you to this one.)

What are your contenders today for Greatest Band of All Time?

Theme Dinners - Season 1, Week 3

This past Wednesday we had our Wednesday Night Dinners III.

What started in Week I as a "let's get together...and bring Cold Food (our theme) because it's so damn hot outside" has turned into -

Week III Theme: Food That Rhymes With The Name of a Saints Player

Of my favorites this week...

- "Doll Clothes" Jason valiantly cooked Drew Brees Macaroni and Cheese. He doesn't cook. I'm thrilled to see him branch outside of his comfort zone.
- Jason "Spaces" brought Lance S'Moores Cupcakes - which was a hit at Dinner - and when I brought the remainders to my office Thursday.
- Angela and Russ (AKA my parents) brought Scott Fujita's fajitas.

Carlos and I presented dishes that rhymed with long-forgotten Saints players: Fred Whittingham's Ham and Navy Bean Soup, and Willie Roaf (pictured)'s Meat Loaf respectively.

Karlie won with her Deuce's Soups. She brought very tasty tomato and cucumber soups. She won a Huddler (pictured below) - a sports version of the "classic" Snuggie.

Based on everyone's votes, our next theme is Idioms. I am leaning toward "Pardon my French", but I'm not sure yet.

A few guests thought we should create a Wednesday Night Dinners Cook Book. Angela thought that "we could even use it as a fundraiser for some good cause....maybe the Food Bank, because it connects to food." That's a great idea. Around the end of year holidays, we're going to take a break from our Dinners. I'll compile all the recipes then. More details to follow.

I hope if you follow my blog here, you'll be interested in purchasing our cookbook!

Stay tuned and...Bon Appétit!

Song History: More Than A Feeling (follow up)

I did not address in my original entry about the song More Than A Feeling that Nirvana had been badgered that their song Smells Like Teen Spirit derived from the former because I did not believe it.

I thought I'd bring it up now because I came across this video today...

I still don't believe it.

Jimmy Fallon Rocks

The best ever Emmy Awards opening...

I thought Jimmy Fallon rocked before. Now I'm sure.

Thanks Carlos for the heads up.

When 1 plus 1 is not equal to 2

Back in college, I was a math major for one semester. (The next semester I had to take Advanced Calculus at 8 am five days a week. I didn't mind the actual course. At 19, getting up for an 8 am class five days a week was not an option. I quickly changed majors.) I am still fascinated by math. Here is a problem that we discussed in our math forums.

I totally stole this post from here.

-------------------

Sometimes we make a habit of assuming things. Or sometimes we think we know things but we don't.

Let me ask you this. Does 1 + 1 = 2 all the time?

The correct answer is, it depends on the context. Add 1 cup of liquid (say, a vinegar) and 1 cup of baking soda solution, and you'll end up with less than 2 cups of something.

It's not all the time that you're in the same page as person next to you. Sometimes, your differences compound until it's not a 1 + 1 matter anymore.

It's not all the time that people you deal with are transparent to you. They may seem to be in the same page as you, but at the back of their minds, they are several pages ahead of you.

How do you deal with these kind of people?

1. Know the context of their actions. Learn to factor other significant details to understand why their conclusion is different from yours.

2. Stick to the generally accepted truth. Sure, 1 + 1 = 2 may not always be correct, but most people I know will accept it as such.

3. Build your own contextual support. We may be looking at the same thing but think differently. However, I can fully support my thoughts and give more weight to my side of truth more than yours.

Also, in base 1, 1 + 1 = 11. In base 2, 1 + 1 = 10. In base 10, 1 + 1 = 2. :)

NOW, if you really, really want to stick with the you-idiot-of-course-im-referring-to-the-decimal-numbering-system kind of argument, here's a proof that 1 + 1 = 1:

Let a = 1 and b = 1.

Therefore a = b, by substitution.

If two numbers are equal, then their squares are equal, too:

a^2 = b^2.

Now subtract b^2 from both sides (if an equation is true, then if you subtract the same thing from both sides, the result is also a true equation) so

a^2 - b^2 = 0.

Now the lefthand side of the equation is a form known as "the difference of two squares" and can be factored into (a-b)*(a+b). If you don't believe me, then try multiplying it out carefully,
and you will see that it's correct. So:

(a-b)*(a+b) = 0.

Now if you have an equation, you can divide both sides by the same thing, right? Let's divide by (a-b), so we get:

(a-b)*(a+b) / (a-b) = 0/(a-b).

On the lefthand side, the (a-b)/(a-b) simplifies to 1, right? and the righthand side simplifies to 0, right? So we get:

1*(a+b) = 0,

and since 1* anything = that same anything, then we have:

(a+b) = 0.

But a = 1 and b = 1, so:

1 + 1 = 0, or 2 = 0.

Now let's divide both sides by 2, and we get:

1 = 0.

Then we add 1 to both sides, and we get:

1 + 1 = 1.

But of course, the above formula is flawed. I'll let you figure it out.

---------------

If you figure it out, leave a comment. Or if you glazed over at the sight of a number, let me know that too.

Another Article About Faux News

Fox News Ignores Ken Mehlman’s Coming Out, Runs Zero Segments On Story

By Igor Volsky on Aug 26th, 2010 at 6:00 pm

When Judge Vaughn Walker struck down Proposition 8, Fox News barely mentioned the story and its most prominent conservative commentators ignored it entirely. Yesterday, after the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder reported that former RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman — who had orchestrated President Bush’s gay-bating 2004 re-election campaign — was coming out as gay, Fox News Channel remained similarly mum and as of this posting has yet to run a single segment on the story.

A Wonk Room review of Critical Mention reveals that CNN mentioned the name “Mehlman” 19 times, MSNBC reported on it 12 times (searches for “gay” and “Ken” produced similar results, with Fox News stuck at 0)...

The entire story is here.

Music: The Final Countdown - Eskimo Disco

I was watching some obscure movie yesterday and this version of Europe's classic catchy tune The Final Countdown was being played over the ending credits.

Thought I'd share.

Now I just have to track down the MP3.

Prank Call

Dear Prank Caller:

I don't appreciate your calling my cell phone at 3 am Friday morning - three times - with your two drunk friends. I don't appreciate your filling up my voice mail with witty banter like, "We were going to prank call you once, but had to call back. You sound like a faggot on your voice mail. FAGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOTTTTTT."

I do appreciate that you are too stupid to realize that, thanks to caller ID, I have your cell phone number. I do appreciate that you would actually post your cell phone number on your MySpace page, which I found easily via Google.

I wanted to let you know that you are your friends are not "niggas" because you are a 19-year-old white kid from Boutte, LA. I wanted to let you know that you really shouldn't post your full name and home address on MySpace.

I am glad to see that you have other hobbies besides prank calling strangers at 3 am - namely bass fishing and making videos of you riding your (too small for you) bike in your backyard. Keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

The one who will post all your personal information here if you ever call again.
